Heat Stroke in Dogs

With the temperatures rising as we get closer to the summer months, it is extremely important to prevent your dog from overheating.

Leaving your dog cooped in a hot car is a sure way to bring on heat stroke. A hot car is like an oven, with temperatures that can rise an astounding 34°F per minute! And when the temperature hits 108°F, the heart, brain, liver, kidneys, and intestinal tracts start to begin breaking down at a cellular level, and the damage can progress at an alarming rate. Even immediate treatment and effective cooling to bring his temperature down can leave the dog with internal damage that may affect his health in long term ways.

Early Signs of Heat Stroke

  • Rapid breathing, dry mouth and nose,
  • rapid heart rate,
  • gums that leave their healthy color for dull, grayish-pink, or red.

THIS IS AN EMERGENCY !

UPDATE:  Titan

TitanDear Lab Rescue,

Just wanted to give you an update on Titan aka (BLUE) he is doing so well.  He has brought so much joy to the household that it's unbelievable.  Here is an updated picture of him.  As you can see this is one of his favorite spots when he wants a little quite time, he loves to lay in our sons backpack. And then of course he is such a photogenic guy.  I want to THANK Lab Rescue for giving Titan and his siblings a chance to find a loving home.  You all are WONDERFUL people.

 We will stay in touch,

The Wilson-Garner Family

UPDATE:  Sooner

I just wanted to update you and let you know how well our sweet "Sooner" (formerly alphie) is doing.

SoonerWe're in our second week of obedience school and i hope that with enough training and practice he will eventually be able to take the therapy dog test and share his love with many other people in need of the smile he brings to our faces.

He's gone to work with me quite a few times and the clients always comment on how well-behaved and kind he is.

We are just so happy to have him as part of our family.

The photo is us dressed for the snow last week!

THANK you to all of you (and especially Barbara) for giving of yourselves and your time to help people like us find the perfect addition to their homes and their lives. After only a few months, I can't imagine what it would be like to be without my little "love bug."

If there is any way we can help out the organization by bringing Sooner to events or speaking to other families considering adopting, please let me know. We are more than happy to give back to the group that helped us have such a great experience in bringing such joy to our lives.

UPDATE:  Mama

MamaHello, We are the Park Family , Denny and Mary Kaye Park, and we adopted MAMA………We live in Clinton and we came into OKC to the I-40 Petsmart at their last pet adoption event, and we met Alex Yaffe…….We asked him about MAMA and he worked it out for us to meet her, and CAN I JUST SAY our lives have been for the better….We picked her up on the 8th of March and she had just been spayed and we drove out to Clinton to her new home……Well we settled in for the night, and was woke from a dead sleep by my husband at 510am the next morning saying SHE IS GONE SHE IS GONE!!!!!  Needless to say after 2 hours of looking, he found her a bout a mile and a half from our house in the United parking lot just trotting along…He brought her home, and we haven’t looked back….

SHE IS WONDERFUL….She has some issues with abandonment, but so would I if I had been left out in the cold…..

We took her along with our family this past week to Little Sahara to ride in the sand dunes….We have a 5 month old grandson, and Crystal our daughter in law , baby Hayden and MAMA were in the travel Mamatrailer…..Hayden has just begun to move around and trying to crawl, and somehow he had worked himself down to where he was just about to fall off the sofa….His head was hanging off the side, Crystal had stepped into the bathroom, and she could see all of this…She was talking to MAMA and Hayden was crying, and she really worried that he was going to fall off the sofa…..MAMA reached up with her paw to keep him from falling off the sofa, which kept him from falling to the floor….Since that time every time that he cries, she goes over to make sure that he is ok……What a wonderful thing this is, and she loves us all so much, and we love her….

This has been the greatest experience….Thanks so much for making this happen for us….
