Rabies Vaccination

In all states, rabies vaccinations are required by law. The first rabies vaccination is good for one year. In many states subsequent vaccinations are good for three years. In other states, they are only valid for one year by law. Please check with your vet to determine the legal requirements in your state. Vaccinating your pet for rabies may literally save its life for two reasons. Rabies is a threat in many areas and it is a horrible disease. In addition, an unvaccinated pet who bites a human being, even by accident, is subject to long quarantine periods or even death for the purpose of testing for rabies infection. Don't risk your pet's life. Get its rabies vaccination.

Kids & Dogs:  A safety tip sheet.

Start teaching your children the following safety guidelines regarding dogs when they are quite young, and continue reinforcing these precautions frequently.

  1. Never run up to a dog.
  2. Never attempt to touch a neighbor's dog through a fence.
  3. Never touch a dog that is growling, showing his teeth, or barking hysterically.
  4. Young children must never approach dogs without a grown-up's supervision.
  5. Always hold your hand out first and allow the dog to sniff your hand.
  6. Never grab at a dog.
  7. Don't approach a dog that is a watch dog protecting his property.
  8. Never attempt to touch a dog that is eating or in possession of a bone or a treat of some sort.
  9. Never hurt the animal by pulling it's tail or fur for example.
  10. If the dog is leashed, ask the dog's owner permission to pet the dog first.
  11. Keep your face away from the dog's, when approaching or playing with them.
  12. Don't make loud noises or sudden moves when approaching a dog. Speak softly to it.
  13. If a dog is chasing you, stop running, as this encourages him to chase you.
Avoid eye contact with an aggressive dog, and back off slowly and non-threateningly.
  14. Do not touch, or attempt to touch, the animal's eyes.

Well, we went to our first vet visit this morning, he has a clean bill, everything looks good and I got the heartworm medication. Sorry it took so long, I also purchased vet insurance (VPI) and the policy period started TODAY! Where should I FAX/email/mail all of the paperwork you guys requested and to who's attention should it go. I brought all of that stuff with me, please advise.

Thanks again and I hope all is going well for your guys up North. Also, Wolfi and I were recently checking out your website, Wolfi was excited to find out that his sister Jill got adopted. I'm supposed to ask you guys if she found a nice home and where she moved to, her brother wanted to know (well me too of course). She was such a sweet girl!

Sincerely,

Alex Rank

UPDATE:  Lucky

We didn't know we had a plan to have some beautiful Labradors become part of our life; yet we are so grateful there was an apparent plan!  About six months ago my husband pulled in the driveway and said..well looks like we have another daughter!  LuckyI immediately fell in love with Lucky; a chocolate lab.  We call her Lucky because she was 3 months old and running loose on a busy street and lived...then came to our home on 10 acres with horses and she was eating steak!  We thought she was pretty Lucky.  I was stunned at my immediate affection because I didn't even know I would want  a dog.  It is just me and my husband now most of the time with 4 grown daughters....but she touched my heart instantly!  Something was missing though.  She had all that space and horses to play with and we played with her....but it just wasn't right.

My husband and I stopped by Petsmart and Lab Rescue was there.  We were drawn to look in the lab book and immediately knew what was missing and fell instantly in love with Iggy. We went home that day and began the adoption process. We were so determined to get Iggy and we  just knew he was the right dog for our home.   We waited and waited and finally the day came when we could go get him!  It was almost like waiting for your baby to be born!  We were so anxious.  When we met Iggy we were asked if we wanted him....we felt he was already part of the family!  That was on June 25th and he loves it here!

Lucky & Iggy playing with a ball.Lucky and Iggy are inseparable and very different.  Lucky just wants to lick you and lay on you!  Iggy is a fetcher!  He will fetch all day if you let him!  If he drops the ball at your feet and you don't pick it up right away...he picks it up again and drops it again..thinking all the while these dumb human, they can't even see the ball!  I affectionately call him OC for obsessive compulsive!  He will stare at the ball and not move until you throw it!  Lucky used to fetch with Iggy, but Iggy is just too fast!  Lucky now sits and gets loved on while Iggy runs...then when Iggy gets close Lucky grabs his collar and brings him in!

Lucky & Iggy playing in the water.Today though, Iggy is starting to love being loved on....they play in their little pool and have no fear of the horses who seem to just love more animals at the party!  It is a great life and more love blesses this home because of our beautiful babies.

Thank you Lab Rescue!

Sincerely,

Diana and Russell Gossett

A Dog's Tale

by Kim Bloomer

My name is Shadrach, and I am a dog - a BIG, handsome, elegant, and intelligent dog. No, I am not vain at all, that is just what my mom always tells me so I assume it's true. I am now 4 ½ years old and live a great dog's life! I get exceptional quality food - my mom and dad believe in giving me organic food, with fresh vegetables and meat every day - so I can't complain. They're always buying me toys which I LOVE to terrorize, because that's what dogs do. I have my own big bed in my own bedroom and I love that. I have a big yard and I like to bark at and chase the pigeons and cats who dare to tread into my space.

The only thing I don't like is having to take a bath UNLESS it with the garden hose in the yard - that is great fun! The best thing is I get LOTS and LOTS of love with hugs and kisses from my mom everyday. My favorite games are tug-o-war and chase. I am the champion of tug-o-war in my house. Chase is so much fun because I am very fast and my people rarely can catch me!

The best part of my day is going to the park where I can meet up with my dog friends and people friends.

However, this great dog's life wasn't always mine. My mom and dad have no idea who my dog mom was or how I came to be with the bad people. My mom's cousin (whatever that is) rescued me from the bad people. She found out I was left alone in a dark garage to just die. The bad people didn't want to feed me or care for me anymore - not that they ever gave me much food to begin with.

Mostly, they left me alone in the yard, garage, or even a dark bathroom sometimes. My mom's cousin knows them and that is how my mom and dad know all this. The bad man hit and kicked me a lot and I don't even know why. I guess that's why I still don't like very many men. I LOVE my dad though and some other men I know from the park that live with my girlfriends. My mom's cousin took me home and fed me but I had to live with her other dogs. They didn't like me very much and beat me up every chance they got - which was usually every day! I was so skinny and little that I just couldn't fight back and it was too cold for me to be outside all the time. Thank God, my new mom and dad came and got me the week before Christmas four years ago.

They spoiled me right away. They gave me good food several times a day. My mom wouldn't let me eat a lot at once because my stomach was too little to handle a lot of food at once. I wanted to though! I kept my tail tucked between my legs while eating for a long time because I was always scared. After a while though, I knew I could just eat and it would be safe. I got my own little bed in a kennel where I could stay and feel safe at night - in the house!

Now, life is so good. I am big and strong now and tough. Men are more afraid of me now since I am so big and tough-looking. My coat is shiny and clean and not dull and dirty like before. My mom even gives me a special supplement that I suspect is a treat really. She puts it in a bowl and I drink every single drop because it is so good. My mom and dad really love me and I'm happy now. My only wish is that when people get a dog that they would take care of them and love them. Otherwise, it's better if they don't take us home with them. We depend on our people to love us and take care of us and not to hurt us. We want to live with our people forever - not just until they get bored of us. So, please, only take us home if we can always stay with just you.

Thank you, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
