UPDATE: Riley has now lost almost 20 pounds. We also determined that she had probably been fed a lot of people food as her teeth were absolutely filthy, so she even got a professional teeth cleaning. People food is extremely bad for dogs to eat. At 123 pounds, Riley was susceptible to heart issues and breathing was extremely difficult for her, not to mention the excessive weight on her hips could have caused leg and hip problems.
I have also determined that someone worked with her quite a bit on her training. In addition to the standard, sit, stay, down commands, she knows to sit and not run out of an open door and will "wait" in the car until you have a chance to grab the leash to get her out. She is a very smart girl and her main goal in life is to please you, so she is very trainable. But please reward her with tasty dog treats - not french fries!
Riley is a 7-year old black lab who came to us from a local shelter when her family refused to pay the fine for a loose dog. Riley came to us weighing 123 pounds and was immediately put on a strict diet. She has now lost 13 pounds but has a ways to go. Riley is probably the happiest labbie I have fostered in a long time and her happiness is very infectious. She is housebroken and crate trained, does not chew or dig and has perfect house manners. She is extremely active for her size and weight and you would never guess she is a 7-year old dog. She gets very excited when she sees her leash and knows she is going to get to go for a walk or a ride in the car. She gets along with other dogs and loves people of all ages. Come out and meet Riley and you wont' be able to help smiling with her.
